1918

Laymatha Sampson was born at Springfield, Iowa, September 15, 1847, and died at her home in Delta, Iowa, October 10, 1918, age 71 years and 25 days.

She was united in marriage to J.W. Garrett, 51 years ago.  To this union five children were born, 3 of whom died in infancy.  The living are C.L. Garrett of Ottumwa and Mrs. Bert Knowler of Delta.  Other relatives are four grandchildren and one brother, Olif Sampson of West Plains, Mo.

She united with the Chrisitan Church at Springfield at the age of 15 years and on moving to Delta became one of the charter members of the Christian Church here of which she was a faithful and consistant member until she was summoned to the Church Triumphant.  She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a good neighbor.

She will be greatly missed in the home and by all who knew her. But how sweet the memory of loving deeds and kindly ministry.  A Mother's love and a Mother's faith is a heritage that is eternal.

It had been previously arranged that a former pastor, now living in Grinnell, should conduct the funeral services but owing to the quarantine conditions just a private service was held at the home, at which a quartet from the Christian Church sang beautiful some very appropriate selections.  Rev. O'Dell of the M.E. church read several selections of scripture, offering prayer and spoke a few words from Ps. 24-1.

The Christian's death is only going home to God.  The remains were laid to rest in the Garrett cemetery.
