Paul Tancer was born on August 12th of 1936, the son of William Henry and Elvie Craig Tancer in Oskaloosa. He was raised and educated in the What Cheer area and was the first What Cheer Homecoming King in 1953. He graduated from the What Cheer High School the following year. In June of 1954, he enlisted in the United States Navy and trained at the Great Lakes Naval Center. He was a Radar Man for the Ship Avenge which was stationed out out Charleston, South Carolina. In 1958, he married Vivian Keith and later in 1965 was united in marriage to Dorothy Teague. Paul worked for Trans America Corporation in Atlanta, GA as a finance manager and also sold real estate until retiring in 1980. He then moved to Erin, TN and became a root farmer. He became ill with cancer in 1992, and moved back to the What Cheer area. Paul loved to read, hunt, fish, and spend time with his grandchildren. Paul passed away on October 23rd, 2001, in Sigourney, Iowa at the age of 65.

Paul's memory is honored by his four sons; Billy and his wife Misty Tancer of Tennessee, Paul and his wife Tami Tancer of Georgia, Carey Tancer of What Cheer, Lonnie and his wife Elke Teague of Georgia, one daughter Carla Gingrey of Tennessee, one sister Phyllis Nicholson and her husband Larry of What Cheer, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and a son Perry Edward Tancer.
