Former What Cheer Woman Dies May 24

Mrs. Nancy Jane Downing, 89 year old former What Cheer woman, died Sunday, May 24, at the Camair convalescent home in Oskaloosa, where she had resided for the past five weeks. She had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Warder of Fremont for nine years.

The daughter of John Thomas and Annie Armstrong Sarvis, she was born December 19, 1877, near Tioga. She was married to Eli Downing and her entire married life was spent at What Cheer. Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Warder of Fremont, Mrs. A.R. Mellott of Ottumwa, Mrs. Earl Schultz of Kirksville, Missouri, and Mrs. R. S. Blecha of Pella; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Fred Sarvis of Oskaloosa.

Funeral services wre held today (Wednesday) at the Fremont Funeral chapel with the Rev. Wayne Heohns of Fremont Methodist church officiating and burial at Tioga cemetery.
