The Celebration of Life for Doris Leota Pittam Herndon

1929 – 2006

Doris Leota Pittam was born on July 25, 1929 on a farm near the small village of Nora in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, the oldest of two girls, to Raymond and Blanch (Wilson) Pittam. She died October 20 , 2006 at the Crete Manor in Crete Nebraska, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 25 days, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She attended the first eight grades of school at Nora, grades nine and ten at the Nelson high school and finished the eleventh and twelve grades at St. Paul, Nebraska. She studied Normal Training in high school and she earned a three year teaching certificate. She taught Thayer County District #28 and District # 11, one room country schools near Hebron. Her parents were in the grocery store business and she spent many hours helping in the store while growing up and also in the summers when not teaching school. She also worked for Hested’s Dime Stores in Superior, Nebraska and other Grocery stores while her husband was in the Army. She was a stay-at-home Mom for her children and later worked at the SunMart Grocery Store in Crete for about ten years as a night checker.

In 1947 Her father sold the store in St. Paul and bought one in Hebron, Nebraska. Doris moved with them to Hebron where she later met her husband William Charles Herndon and they were married on February 8, 1951 in Hebron at the Methodist Church. Born to this union were two sons, Ronald C. Herndon and Douglas A. Herndon, and one daughter, Barbara Jean Herndon.

Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior when a small girl and lived a devoted Christian throughout her life. She taught her children the high morals and values of Christian life. She taught Sunday school quite often as a substitute when just out of high school and a regular teacher later for many years. Two of her favorite Bible passages was John 3:15-17 and John 14:1-3 and also the 23rd Psalm.

Doris loved camping, visiting flea markets and antique stores and also reading, with biographies being her favorite books.

Doris was a devoted loving wife to her husband and a very dedicated loving mother to her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Surviving her are her sons and their spouses, Ronald & Patricia Herndon of Colorado Springs, CO; and Douglas & Rieko Herndon of Crete; and daughter and husband, Barbara & Hani Shafai of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren, Scott Herndon & fiancée, Michelle Bayless, Brett Herndon, Carrie Herndon all of Colorado Springs, Co.; Sharaf William Shafai and Yasmeen Lee Shafai, of Rapid City, SD; one sister & husband, Donna & Dr. Dewey Gillett, of Leavenworth, KS; and nephews Mark & Rebecca Gillett, of Shawnee Mission, KS and Blake & Diane Gillett of Kansas City, MO; and many cousins and a host of friends.

Cremation, and burial of the cremains at a later date at Atlanta Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church, Crete, NE; Alzheimer’s Association, Great Plains Chapter; Lincoln, NE; the Cedars Home for Children, Lincoln, NE. or one of your own choosing.
