Ceremony honors veterans in cemetery

FRANKLIN -- The Lee County Pioneer Cemetery Association will conduct its sixth annual Pioneer Patriots Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Judy Cemetery.

The cemetery is 3 miles east of Franklin and can be reached by taking the Golden Road.

The ceremony will honor 19th century veterans buried in Lee County pioneer cemeteries, many of whom went to their graves without military honors, according to organizer Terry Altheide.

Many of these veterans are buried in abandoned and neglected cemeteries, he said. The association started the tradition in 2003 as a way to draw attention to the many forgotten cemeteries in Lee County.
